“The illusion of control is the tendency for people to overestimate their ability to control events; for example, it occurs when someone feels a sense of control over outcomes that they demonstrably do not influence.”1 To varying degrees of intensity, we all try to control our lives and sometimes the events and situations around us. However as we all know, there are events and tragedies in life and the world that are simply out of our control. Musically, I aimed to create a balance between having extreme control, and mostly having control with techniques and sounds that naturally vary with each performance.
The Illusion of Control was written for Duo Zonda and composed in May of 2017.
