The Dream has Ended in Death was named after and inspired by a lithograph with the same title by French artist, Odilon Redon (1840-1916). The image is black and white and shows a skeletal ghost appearing out of the darkness and hovering over a person submerged in water, with essentially only their eyes and nose above the water facing upwards. Although left to interpretation as with most art, it is likely that the person is dead, and possibly the person who had been dreaming. Regardless, Redon’s works are beautiful, mysterious, dark, often mystical, and are prime examples of the gothic style that was prevalent in much of the European literature and art of the late 19th & early 20th Centuries. When composing this piece inspired by Redon’s intense art, I hoped to capture my impressions by creating something equally moody, mysterious, and perhaps dark.
The Dream has Ended in Death was commissioned by flutist, Tammy Evans Yonce and completed in January of 2017.
Please let me know of any performances - I would love to promote the concert and come if I can!
