In short, the “shadow” refers to the “dark side” within each of us, according to Jungian psychology. This dark side is not necessarily entirely negative, but can be harmfully projected if not embraced and dealt with by an individual. If we accept and understand our dark side, then we can be balanced and truly know ourselves. But if we ignore or deny it, than it will often negatively manifest itself in harmful ways. Jung also believed that "in spite of its function as a reservoir for human darkness—or perhaps because of this—the shadow is the seat of creativity." Another interpretation is simply to take responsibility for your actions.
Musically, I wanted to abstractly create a sense of the “self” trying to own the “dark side” by often having the violin and bass clarinet in close canon with each other. I also embrace both raw (dark side) and refined (self/ego) sounds as beautiful equals in this piece, as I do in most my music.
Own Your Own Shadow was commissioned by Box Not Found and composed during October of 2017 through January of 2018.
