When composed in 2008, Octet was originally titled Octet for the End of the Day and had three movements. Upon revising it in 2012-13, I dropped the third movement because it has potential to be its own piece and does not quite go with the first two. I also reduced the title because the original is unrelated to the music itself and felt superimposed.
The two movements approach a similar aesthetic very differently. The notation for the first movement allows the music to happen organically. Although they will sound similar, this means that the first movement will naturally sound different with each performance. The second movement is strictly notated in a very rhythmic and repetitive way. And although hitting all of the notes in the right places is desired, it is also understood that there will likely be slight variations because it may be potentially stressful to perform. Both movements, I think, convey a blend of static and kinetic energy among many other things that are up to you as the listener to decide. Comparatively, the first movement allows the performers to be rather relaxed during its performance, whereas the second requires their constant and undivided attention.
Please let me know if you plan on performing this piece. I would love to promote it and come to the concert if I can!
