The pitch material for Left-Handed is derived from a 12-tone row that is not treated serially in any way whatsoever. Groupings of the row are repeated in rapid succession and varying rhythmic patterns. The expression markings at the beginning of the score are as follows: aggressive, rhythmic, bubbling, urgent. This piece is primarily about texture and energy, and these four words sonically describe the piece well. Toward the second half and through to the end, a stark and aggressive unison melody gradually begins to emerge. At first it is interrupted often, but then gradually pieced together. Ultimately, the unison melody blends into the pervading dense texture.
Left-Handed was commissioned by The Open Theatre Project in Boston, MA. It was premiered during their New Works Festival at Zumix Center for the Arts, Boston, MA, on September 23, 2011 by Amy Advocat, Rebecca Wellons, and Dane Palmer.
Please let me know if you plan on performing this piece. I would love to come to the concert if I can, or at least promote it!
