The title is taken from the witty 1996 film Conspirators of Pleasure by Czech surrealist filmmaker Jan Svankmajer. The film takes place in Prague and shows the lives of several ordinary, yet sexually repressed people. With very little dialogue, the characters meticulously prepare their sexual “feasts” which often include the use of food, rope, animals, and many other common household objects. The clarinet and percussion “work together” in Conspirators of Pleasure to create music that is often awkward and restrained, but ultimately explosive and wild.
Conspirators of Pleasure was written for the Devil May Care duo (DMC duo) in Spring of 2010. Conspirators of Pleasure was premiered in Cambridge, Massachusetts on June 21, 2010.
Please let me know if you plan on performing this piece. I’d love to come to the concert if I can, or at least promote it!
