In late fall of 2010, percussionist Matt Sharrock asked me to write a marimba concerto for them. Not only are they a phenomenal performer who has conducted and performed many of my pieces, but they are also a good friend. I was very excited and honored that they asked me to take on such an intriguing and challenging compositional task. For me, the first question that needed to be answered was this: “What ensemble will have its own identity while supporting the marimba without overpowering it?” Fortunately for me, Matt already had an ensemble in mind: String Orchestra. Sonically, string orchestra has a rich and diverse palette, a large dynamic range, and a homogeneous texture that does not interfere with the distinct characteristics of the marimba. Perfect!
Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra was originally completed in August of 2011 and revised in 2014-15. In its original form, it was premiered at Emmanuel Church in Boston, MA on May 6, 2012 with Matt Sharrock as the soloist and conducted by Jeffrey Means.
Please let me know if you plan on performing this piece, I’d love to advertise it and come to the concert if I can!
